A palm with a single grey trunk, often with yellow strips. It has pinnate leaves which on the adult plant can be 4 m. long with dark green, shiny, rather leathery pinnules, up to 15 cm.. In the first weeks when the leaf unfurls it generally has a dark red colour which then turns bronze and finally to green.
