  • Family: PALMAE

Widespread over South East Asia, the Caryota is found in rainforests at moderate elevations from Burma and southern China south to Sumatra and Java. It is a large palm with a long, smooth trunk and a tall crown with many dark leaves that display a typical tumbling habit. It does best in the tropics. For cooler areas, however, Caryota maxima "Himalaya" would be a better choice.
